BLEPHAROPLASTY SWELLING AFTER SURGERY OF DRY EYES, LOWER EYELID, BROW LIFT

Technology has allowed diverse surgical procedures to be done such that we can no longer distinguish what is real and what is not. Even the tiniest details can now be revised such as the upper or lower eyelids. A surgery involving the eyelids is called blepharoplasty. Care should be considered because post-operative complications include blepharoplasty swelling.

Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure that intends to reshape the eyelids by repositioning or removing excess tissues and reinforcing the surrounding muscles or tendons within it.

BLEPHAROPLASTY PROCEDURE

The basic procedure would involve a general or a local anesthesia for sedation purposes. The surgery would usually take about one to three hours. It would basically improve conditions such as eye puffiness or drooping eyes. Some may need just the upper eyelid blepharoplasty surgery, or just the lower lids but others would be performed on both the upper and the lower eyelids.

A blepharoplasty incision would be made on the lower lash lines and may extend beyond the eye. All excess fat, skin, or muscle will be excised, after which the incision will be closed.

In some patients whose eyelids are a bit loose, the eyelids need to be tighten. In this case however, there will be more blepharoplasty swelling and this requires a longer period of recovery.

AFTER BLEPHAROPLASTY

Here are a couple of things to expect after the operation.

  • Recovery from the surgery and from blepharoplasty swelling would usually take two to four weeks.
  • The complete healing process would take about six months for the scars to totally heal.
  • Your eyes would usually feel tight with a mild discomfort due to the swelling and bruise on the eyes.
  • Blepharoplasty incisions feel bumpy and all red but it will flatten and fade gradually in about a week.
  • Blepharoplasty swelling would disappear in a week or two depending on the extent of the surgery.
  • There is also a tendency that your eyes may be stuck together. If this happens, immediately clear the eyelashes lightly with a Q-tip dipped in warm water.

BLEPHAROPLASTY RECOVERY

Just like any surgery, scars and blepharoplasty swelling will be present and visible but it will diminish considerably with time. It can also be concealed with makeup. The important thing is the postoperative care because there is a risk of temporary or the permanent loss of the sense of sight.

Aftercare involves the following:

  • Elevating the head and applying cold compress to reduce blepharoplasty swelling and bruising.
  • Blood pressure likewise needs to be monitored as it might lead to bleeding complications.
  • There is a need to constantly lubricate the eyes after the surgery to avoid dryness.
  • Activities that would cause eye dryness have to be avoided such as watching television, reading, or using a contact lens.
  • Additional eye movements like blinking have to be avoided, too, as this would irritate the eyelids and cause more blepharoplasty swelling.
